What is PennNeuroKnow?

The website cover photo, taken by neuroscience PhD student Maeve Coughlan, shows a kind of brain cell called an astrocyte (grey). One of an astrocyte’s many jobs in the brain is to influence the way that neurons communicate with each other at the places that they meet, called synapses. Each astrocyte can touch hundreds of thousands of synapses where they use a molecule called a glutamate transporter (magenta) to change how the connected neurons communicate.

Just like astrocytes influence communication between neurons, Penn NeuroKnow aims to simplify how we communicate about neuroscience by writing weekly posts breaking down the brain for everyone to understand. By making learning about neuroscience easy for everyone, our goal is to expand the way that we as neuroscientists engage with the public, and to help increase exposure to and interest in neuroscience.
